Here is a short set of rules I learned raising my girls. We need to Love them, Honor them, Respect them, and Protect them. I guess everybody knows that part but what I had to learn was that I had to do it in that order. If I put protecting my girls as my number one priority then it would keep them from living their own lives. That would be disrespecting them as an individual who has the right to learn from their own mistakes. It would dishonor them by telling them that only I was good enough to make decisions for them and they were not smart enough or good enough to make those choices. That isn't Loving them. That is possibly destroying them. In order to do the first three you have to back off a little on the last one. You have to let them experience some danger, take some risk, so that they can learn and grow.
