Safe Food Storage Containers

Understanding The Health Impact Of Plastic Food Storage Containers

We live in a plastic world

Plastics are everywhere. Some part of your body is probably in contact with some form of plastic 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Almost everything that we use or consume is or has been processed and stored in plastic some time within it's lifetime. You can't get away from it : we live in a plastic world.

The BPA scare

Plastic Containers Are Toxic To Planet Earth

It's impossible to go through the grocery store without seeing something labeled BPA FREE. A number of years ago it was determined that BPA (Bisphenol - A) was detrimental to human health in quantities that could leach into foods from the containers the foods were stored in. Where did this BPA scare come from?

A book with the title Our Stolen Future with a forward by vice president Al Gore was published in 1996. The book is now available in 14 languages. The subject of the book is an hypothesis that claims that man-made chemical contaminants disrupt the endocrine process in humans, interfering with human hormones, and changing the direction of fetal growth in unborn babies.

The chemical of great concern is BPA (Bisphenol - A) because it is in millions of products. Over 8 billion pounds of the stuff is created every year with a revenue stream of over $6 billion. That's big business. The exposure to BPA, primarily from plastic food containers, allegedly results in babies that have a compromised immune system and a slight mental deficiency. With that much money at stake a controversy is inevitable, and it's intense, and ongoing.

So Why Not Just Take Out The BPA?

The pliable, formable, cheap and available plastics in all sorts of shapes and sizes are impossibly difficult and expensive to manufacture without including something like BPA in the formula. It isn't so easy to just take it out. So instead, some chemical companies just substituted BPS and instead of BPA. There wasn't any bad information related to BPS so they just switched it out and labeled the plastics BPA free.

So is BPS safe, safer then BPA?

Plastic Containers Are Toxic To Planet Earth

Here is where the story gets strange and demonstrates just how broken our regulatory system is. It was never required that BPA be tested before being used in the manufacture of plastic food containers. Those tests were performed after BPA had been used for decades. The same is true for BPS. No testing was required before using BPS in food storage containers either. In fact BPS had no negative test results because it had NOT BEEN TESTED. A study by Scientific American (bpa free plastic containers may be just as hazardous) indicates that the BPA-BPS switch over was just a little joke played on an unsuspecting public, with the full support of the regulatory authorities. This kind of bad press indicates that what many believe may be true; that our government and its regulators are all bought and paid for by big industry.

What does government and industry say about BPA in plastic food storage containers?

Multiple reports by government and industry representatives indicate that the whole BPA/BPS scare is just BS.

Relating to Carcinogenicity, Reproductive and Developmental issues, Endocrine Activity, and Pharmacokinetics numerous studies have demonstrated no discernible negative effects related to BPA in plastics. The whole issue related to low dose effects, according to governments and industry, has been soundly debunked (BPA MYTHS). A recent study by the European Food Safety Authority concluded "that they could not identify any new evidence which would lead them to revise their opinion that the presently known levels of exposure to BPA is safe." (Wikipedia)

Why Not Err On The Side Of Caution?

With the abysmal reputation on the part of governments and industry on telling the truth, and the incessant desire of some to achieve fame and fortune by publishing alarmist literature, it is no wonder that this controversy will persist, probably far longer than any of us will live. Who then should we believe? Who should we trust?

Well, it doesn't really matter because there are products available that make the whole argument mute.

Just don't use plastics to store food!

It's a bit more expensive, but at least you are safe from the contaminants, regardless who wins the argument about BPA.

Listed below are a number of items specifically designed to be safe and pure and an excellent alternative to plastic food storage containers. The first ones displayed below are made from stainless steel. The second section below is made from glass, or glass with a thin silicone sleeve for sealing the lid when storing food.

If you purchase one of these items by linking from this article we will receive a small (very small) commission on the sale, so we would appreciate you linking through our site.

Shop For Pollution Free Non-Toxic Food Storage

In 2009 Sandra Ann Harris, a mother trying to pack her kids lunch in a safe and effective manner, founded ECOlunchbox, a small company dedicated to safe food packaging and to reducing the devastating impact that disposable plastics have on the environment.

Since the founding of the company it has grown well beyond her expectations, selling hundreds of thousands of ECO lunch boxes, and saving millions of pieces of trash that would otherwise be polluting the planet.

Give ECO lunch boxes a try and save yourself from potential chemical contamination and help the planet recover from the relentless pollution caused by plastic containers.

Plastic Containers Are Toxic To Planet Earth

There is nothing safer for storing food than glass.

The Anchor Hocking Company is the result of numerous mergers starting in Lancaster, Ohio, in 1905 making lamp chimneys from glass. It has now grown to a diversified manufacturer and importer of consumer and industrial products.

Anchor Hocking uses tempered soda-lime-silicate glass to make their bakeware which has excellent performance and safety records. The tempered glass is designed to make the bakeware durable enough to withstand baking, washing, and storing environments.
Equally important is the safety aspect of this type of tempered glass. In the same manner that an automobile windshield will shatter into numerous tiny pieces when broken, the tempered soda-lime-silicate glass is designed to shatter when broken. Breaking into small pieces (there may be a few bigger pieces) which generally lack sharp edges avoids the large sharp glass shards that can cause serious injury. Although the customer may hear a shockingly loud crash if a piece of glassware breaks, this is actually the safe design doing what it is supposed to do.

If you want to go with glass give Anchor Hocking a try and save yourself from any chance of chemical contamination.

Anchor Hockings glass is doubly green, in that it saves the planet from disposable plastic food storage items and also because the manufacturing process for soda-lime-silicate glass is environmentally friendly compared to other processes.

Which Glass Is Best?

As good as the tempered soda-lime-silicate glass is, and it is totally adequate for normal cooking, it still does not have the premium quality performance as the old-fashioned borosilicate glass.

Borosilicate glassware was the standard high performance glass for both cooking and scientific work for decades. Soda-lime glass is cheaper, however, so most US glass manufacturers switched to Soda-lime glass. Borosilicate glass is still the standard in Europe.

In an article by Consumer Reports, test results were revealed showing the superior performance characteristics of Borosilicate glass compared to Soda-lime glass.

A few items are listed below from these two manufacturers, and there are many more at the store If you want to use the highest quality glass cookware available then give one of these products a try.

We Saved The Best For Last?

When it comes to toxic containers and the pollution of our planet nothing is as notorious as the cheap plastic water bottle. Planet Earth is becoming a toxic plastic waste dump.

To the rescue come several manufactures of food grade stainless steel water bottles. These are not just ordinary bottles, but are vacuum sealed thermos bottles that keep beverages cold all day long, or hot for about 12 hours.

All the cool kids are toting the S'well brand which comes in a variety of sizes and colors. S'well is also the most expensive but there are several other brands with equivalent specifications that are more affordable, and they have cool colors too.
