As the 2018 holiday shopping season gets into high gear this November and December we wanted to create a page which listed what teenagers want for their holiday gifts. We wanted to list the top Christmas gifts for teens, but it didn't exactly turn out that way.
Expert Fail
We went to all the places where the "experts" listed what teens would be wanting this year. We studied their lists of products and a few things became clear. Each "expert" had a different list. That's suspicious. You would think the various expert lists would be similar, since they are all talking about the same teens. Right?
A closer examination begged the question "Would any self respecting teen want any of this crap?". We decided, no, they wouldn't. These "expert" lists were put together by marketers who are influenced ($paid$) by manufacturers to hawk the junk the manufactures hope some (misguided) parents will buy for their kids. There has to be a better way to figure out what our kids want. Our 2018 top Christmas gifts for teens list would have to be based on something other than the information from these fake experts.
If you need to know - Ask the ones who know
How about, maybe, just ask the kids themselves? That's actually very easy to do because it's popular these days for teens to Vlog (video blog) their Christmas Wish Lists on their YouTube channels. Although some of these kids are just learning, others are already experienced videographers, creating professional quality videos. It's amazing to see the skills already developed in kids as young as 12.
Yes, some of these kids have corporate sponsors, but they are still too young to be so jaded as to pretend they like things just to make a buck, or get a prize. Their inherent honesty has not, so far, been eroded by the stress and anxieties of having to pay the rent.
I'm not bragging
Each video contains a somewhat standard disclaimer which goes something like this. "I don't really expect to get all this stuff, and I'm not bragging about the stuff I might get, and I'm not selfish or spoiled or anything like that." Yes, we believe you ... so ... yeah.
When it comes to Holiday Shopping : Girls Rule!
We randomly selected almost six dozen videos, all girls for some reason, and made a list of their gift suggestions. We're not sure why there were no young men Vlogging their lists. Maybe it's a girl thing? We carefully sourced the most popular items and have listed them below. Our top Christmas list ideas for teens has, of necessity, become our best Christmas gifts for teen girls. Many of the items the girls desire will be the same things teen boys would be interested in, except, maybe, the makeup and the Victoria's Secret items.

Gift Cards
Ask any Teenager what they want for the holidays and somewhere in that list will be Gift Cards. Here is a list of Gift Cards that you can purchase online. Most of these were mentioned by name in the videos we reviewed as stores where teens love to shop. The most often mentioned were Starbucks, Sephora, Panera, Urban Outfitters, and Forever 21.

BATH BOMBS
One item that was mentioned over and over, this year and last year alike, with much love and affection, are the bath products by LUSH and Victoria`s Secret.
Listed below are a few items from their collection of products.
PRICE ALERT: LUSH products are available on both the LUSH website, and on Amazon Dot Com. For some reason the prices on Amazon are about twice the price of the Lush website. We`re not sure why they do that, it`s sort of dumb. We will, as we always do, monitor the prices and let you know where the best deals are.
Bath & Body
Another favorite that was mentioned often this year are the bath and body products by Bath & Body Works.

Shoes
There is no way to explain to a boy the nature of a girls relationship with her shoes. It's almost a spiritual thing, or maybe it IS spiritual. Boys love their shoes too, but not the same way as girls. In the videos that we watched we heard a mention of Nike, of course, specifically the Roshe Run line of shoes. Vans and Converse were mentioned a few times but the sneaker that`s getting the love in 2016 is the Black and White Adidas Superstar. The UGGs with the little bows on the back were mentioned more than once in 2015 but not so far in 2016, or 2017. Rain boots were a favorite item in 2015 but in 2016 ankle boots are trending. Lights and Cameras and Vlogging equipment
Since our sources are all video bloggers it would stand to reason that they would have a great interest in upgrading their Vlogging equipment. Many of them have already outgrown the average camera systems and are ready for professional quality products. They really are that good at what they do. Here then is a list of some of the items that were mentioned in their Wish Lists.
There Is Some Confusion
There is some confusion about what is a YouTube channel and what is a vlogging channel. Technically they are both YouTube pages. The usage by the young b(v)loggers however, shows a distinction. They refer to their videos shot in front of a camera on a tripod where they speak of makeup, clothing and other items as their YouTube channel. Many have another YouTube page which they refer to their vlogging page where they take a camera outside and walk around shooting videos of places and events that they visit.
The Vlogging Camera Of Choice
Although the camera most often seen on the top of a tripod is a DSLR, for the walk about vlogging enthusiast the most recommended camera is the Canon GX7. It is much smaller and lighter than a big clunky DSLR but still has excellent video quality.
Fuzzy Backgrounds
Most of the video blogs are made in the house, usually sitting on the end of their bed in their bedroom. It is quite popular to use a lens with a shallow depth of field so that the background items are fuzzy and out of focus. For this fuzzy effect you have to have the right lens, and many young bloggers have recommended the Sigma 30mm f-1.4 ART lens as the lens of choice.
Speaking Of Tripods
Speaking of tripods, more than a few have complained about their worn out ragiddy broken down tripod held together with duct tape. Tripods are relatively inexpensive, and although they won't fit in a stocking, they should fit nicely under the tree.
If you are getting a camera system for a video blogger, make sure to ask them what kind they want. They will certainly have already picked out a dream system. and you better get them the right one. :)

The MacBook Pro
Almost everyone we listened to wanted to upgrade their computer equipment, and each an every one asked for the same thing - A Macbook Pro. For the video blogger in your life there is no substitute for the Macbook. They range in price from the `not so bad` for the 13 inch to the `absolutely ridiculous` for the 15 or 17 inch model with all the extras.
Make sure to ask your blogger which one they want, for to be sure they are already dreaming of the perfect one. Most of the young women only mentioned their desire for the Macbook and then, staring at the floor, said they knew it was too expensive. Imagine the squeals of joy and the hugs if they find one under the tree.

Vintage and Retro items
Products and Brands that we thought died out years ago are making a comeback, and not with old grey haired people lost in the mist of nostalgia. Teenagers are getting into Vintage and Retro items in droves. Key wound alarm clocks with the big bells on top, vinyl record players, Polaroid cameras, and manual clickety clack typewriters with cloth ribbons; all of these and more are on our top Christmas gifts for Teen girls this holiday season.

In 2017 the only mention, so far, has been record players. Given the renewed interest in vinyl recording, it`s hardly retro anymore, but the styles are still from years gone by.
Is this a nostalgia for things they are too young to have experienced? Is it bonding with grandma and grandpa who tell the tales of years gone by? Emerging past life memories, maybe? Who knows? What we do know is that these 'things' from the past are 'things' again and teens want them.
These are not antiques or replicas. These are brand new items with modern performance standards that are based on the design and functionality of their older relatives of the 50's 60's and 70's.

Jewelry is always a popular item with young women. Youth is all about personal expression and Jewelry is an important aspect of that expression. Although there are many types of Jewelry that are popular it is the Alex and Ani product line, specifically the bracelets, that are mentioned most often.<-- That was true in 2015. In 2016, not so much, and not at all in 2017. Not one mention so far. There are still a few in our list for those who still are into Alex and Ani.
